The faculty, staff, and graduate students of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and all who protest police brutality and other violence against Black people in our country and throughout the world. The murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Rayshard Brooks are just the most recent incidents in a long history of racist violence against, and systemic oppression of, Black people in the United States of America. We condemn in the strongest possible terms these horrific incidents and the racism from which they stem. Racial oppression is rooted in the very founding of this country, and the fight against this oppression still has a very long way to go. We recommit ourselves now to doing all we can to end this pernicious and evil current coursing throughout society.
