Gregory Scontras (Language Science, UC Irvine) gives a master class on RSA theory, in preparation for his talk the following day as part of the Formal Fridays workshop.

Title: A practical introduction to modeling ambiguity in the Rational Speech Act framework

Description: This workshop provides participants with a hands-on introduction to the Bayesian Rational Speech Act modeling framework, the state of the art in formal pragmatics. We’ll start with the basics of the framework: recursive social reasoning by speakers and listeners about utterances and interpretations that are most likely to resolve whatever question happens to be under discussion. Then, we’ll consider a specific application of the framework to the case of quantifier scope ambiguity.

To get the most out of the workshop, be sure to bring an internet-connected device (ideally a laptop, but a tablet would do).
