Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) is an international organization whose goal is to remove barriers to participation in philosophy for members of under-represented groups. MAP is made up of over 140 chapters worldwide. These chapters are primarily graduate-student led, though they rely on faculty support and encourage undergraduate participation. Each MAP chapter aims at addressing (a) minority issues in the profession, (b) theoretical issues regarding philosophy of gender, race, sexual orientation, class, disability, native language, etc, and (c) philosophy done from minority perspectives. Learn more about MAP on their website.
Our UMass Amherst MAP chapter was established in 2020 with the goal of fostering a more inclusive climate in the philosophy department. We plan to organize opportunities for respectful discussion and peer support. These opportunities include such events as colloquia, film screenings, peer groups and other social events, inclusivity and sensitivity training for instructors, and reading groups. In the immediate future, we plan to organize a philosophy of race reading group.
If you’re a UMass Amherst student interested in getting involved with MAP, we’d love for you to join us. And, if you have questions about the chapter or specific events, please feel free to contact us at @email, or visit our website.
