June and July are New Students Orientation Office’s busiest months. It’s when we welcome new students and families to campus through our New Students Orientation programs. We offer ten 2-day orientation sessions for first-year students and families and one overnight and three 1-day sessions for transfer students, families, and friends.
First-year and transfer students attend New Students Orientation (NSO) to familiarize themselves with the campus, pick their courses, get their UCard, complete their housing preference application, learn about the University’s core community values and practices, and meet their fellow classmates! Families meanwhile have the option to attend a concurrent orientation program to learn important information about their student’s transition to college and UMass; become familiar with the University and its policies; and know what campus resources are available in different departments to help their student be successful at UMass Amherst. Information sessions being presented at the Parent and Family Orientation program include academics, billing, campus safety, student health and wellness, housing, and technology. Families will also get an overview of Fall Welcome and what they can expect at move-in. They’ll even take a look in some residence halls to help prepare their students for move-in!
By attending Summer Orientation, families of first-year and transfer students will gain knowledge and develop the skills necessary to assist in their student’s transition to college and UMass. In addition, they will receive tips on how to encourage and support their student, interact with university faculty and staff, and meet families of other incoming students. Here is what attendees said about Parents and Family Orientation.
“I was so impressed by the warmth, intelligence, and enthusiasm with which the day was put together. It was a phenomenal introduction to UMass.” Jesse from New Jersey
“Well organized, comprehensive, multi-faceted, and delivered with a genuine and engaging desire to inform and educate.” Maureen from Massachusetts
“The presentations were well-organized, and information was presented in an interesting way. Two days was just the right amount of time. I also enjoyed meeting other families.” Daniel from California
