There are many non-theistic philosophical and ethical belief systems which contribute to a sense of meaning and purpose in life, and are not based on a belief in a divine being. These humanistic and ethical traditions are not "religious" in nature and generally have their roots in natural, rational, or empirical philosophies rather than metaphysics or any belief in the supernatural.

Secular Humanism is one such tradition. Although there is not a Secular Humanist group at UMass Amherst, a newly-formed student organization, the Secular Student Alliance (SSA), welcomes any student who is interested in skeptical inquiry. SSA provides a safe community for atheists, agnostics, humanists and skeptics. The group will organize forums for discussion, guest speakers, and debates that educate the community.
