Laboratory Medical Zoology
The Laboratory of Medical Zoology (LMZ) is an academic research lab at the University of Massachusetts. The focus of our research is on infectious diseases, with particular attention to those diseases with transmission cycles that involve other animal species. The general term for these diseases is "zoonosis". Zoonoses come in many kinds and are as diverse as the animal and microbial kingdoms. Study of infectious diseases traditionally are conducted by various kinds of biologists such medical entomologists, medical microbiologists, epidemiologists, etc.. We call ourselves Medical Zoologists, because we study animals (and microbes) of medical relevance, and we don't draw the line at any particular taxonomic group.
