Here are some additional tools you'll need to learn the University's policies and procedures:

Student Validity Process

To assure that the student who enrolls in an online course/program is the same student who participates in and completes the program and receives the academic credits:

  • The student who enrolls for the online course is ‘batched’ into the course through SPIRE and Blackboard Learn using only the information from their registration.
  • The student uses their assigned login credential to actually log into the course each time they want access to the course.
  • UMass Amherst IT’s acceptable use policy further addresses this topic.
  • Therefore, the person who has those credentials is the same person doing the work.
  • Online faculty state in their syllabus information about the University’s academic honesty rules and the potential results for any violations.
  • Online faculty input grades via SPIRE for each student based upon the same registration information.

Proctored Exams

The Mathematics and Statistics department, in accordance with UMass Amherst, promotes the integrity and security of its courses.

To further secure its courses, the department will require one (or more) proctored exams during the midterm and final exam periods.

Students who enroll in affected online courses will have to take a proctored midterm and/or final exam within the scheduled exam time frame.

Off-campus proctoring will require either a webcam or travel to an accredited testing center. All proctoring arrangements must be in place and approved by the instructor and math department no later than the last day of add/drop for the course.

Affected Online Courses

  • Math 011, 100, 104, 113, 127, 128, and Stat 240 (final only)
  • Math 131, 132, 233, 235, 331, and Stat 515 (midterm and final)
