August 19, 20 & 21

Power Up for College Success is a 3-day, single credit online course for entering first-year students. We will help you begin your college years with confidence, and increase the likelihood of your having a successful tenure at UMass. At Power Up, you will learn how to make the best of your time at UMass Amherst, including effective strategies for meeting and engaging with fellow students and professors during this time of social distancing.

Whether you come to campus this fall or study remotely, Power Up will help you make friends and connections with other entering first-year students. Your instructor will emphasize key study skills you need to succeed in a virtual classroom like effective note-taking, online engagement, and optimum time management in the virtual world. You will receive information about the many resources at UMass to help you during your first year and in successive years as you pursue your degree.

Each Power Up class will be limited to 20 students. Throughout the program, we will offer synchronous interactive presentations to get you started on developing an educational plan. You will learn how to develop positive relationships with your professors, mentors, and TA’s. You will acquire strategies to best take advantage of advising centers and peer advising groups. You will discover how, why, and when to seek professional internships, service-learning opportunities, and community service projects.  You will develop habits that will be useful throughout your time at UMass and as you go forward in the professional world.
