Health & Safety in the Studio: Hazards & Precautions in Art and Theater Work

Health and Safety in the Art Studio is a special, intensive week long summer course taught by Industrial Hygienist Monona Rossol. It is designed for both students planning to be artists and safety professionals with a focus in the arts. The objective of the course is to provide students with tools to assess risks and provide appropriate precautions and strategies that will enable them to work in the arts safely for a lifetime. This course gives participants a rare opportunity to learn directly from Monona Rossol, a pioneer in the field of art safety. Rossol provides a comprehensive guide to safety and environmental laws for visual artists, designers, art educators, theater technicians, builders, and safety professionals in an informative, interesting and frequently entertaining way. Health and Safety in the Art Studio focuses on using art and theater materials in compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations and in addition, presents students with tools and information to protect both artists and the environment. Rossol reviews safety requirements for professional studio artists as well as classroom requirements for all student populations (including children, college-age, seniors, and art therapy patients). Students who pass the final exam will receive a letter from Rossol certifying their training in certain OSHA regulations. These letters have qualified many individuals for jobs in arts practice or education (in several theatrical unions, these letters are accepted in lieu of OSHA training).
