Support Student Success: High Impact Practices (HIPs)

Increase the coherence of the undergraduate educational experience through careful curricular scaffolding and integration of classroom and co-curricular high-impact practices (HIPs) such as internships, study abroad, research opportunities, community service, etc.


(+) Seniors’ participation in practicum, internship, field experience, co-op experience or clinical assignment has increased by 9 percentage points since 2008.

(+) The participation in culminating senior experience has increased by 10 percentage points since 2008.

UMass Amherst students’ participation in these HIPs is a few percentage points higher than the external comparison group, with the exception of culminating senior experiences (UMass Amherst is 7 percentage points lower than external comparison group, even though percent of students participating has increased 8 percentage points over time).

There have been no changes over time for participation in internships and study abroad
