ABOUT – overview | facilities | instructors

Our faculty and guest instructors are all active working professionals in the NewYork art world. They share their lived experience and insight with students, giving them a realistic understanding of what it takes to pursue an art career. Over the past twenty years, NYPOP students have visited with over 350 art professionals.

“NYPOP offers a snapshot of the contemporary art world.  We morph the study of aesthetics with practical information about starting a career in the visual arts.   Our goal is to introduce students to the possibility of a career, to fan the flame of their dream.”

Jerry Kearns has lived and worked in NYC for more than 30 years.  A professor at UMassAmherst, Kearns founded The New York Professional Outreach Program in 1990.

Kearns has exhibited internationally for 30 years.  His paintings and prints are in the collections of 35 museums in the U.S. and abroad.  Among these are The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, The Berlin National Gallery, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, Havana, and The Gallery of Western Australia, Perth.

“There is nothing more exciting and terrifying for an emerging artist than making the transition from student to professional. The reality of making a living as an artist can seem unattainable. NYPOP helps to demystify the profession and give students real guidance in making that transition.”

Amanda Tiller moved to Brooklyn in 2007, shortly after receiving her MFA from UMassAmherst. Having participated in NYPOP as a graduate student, Amanda brings a unique perspective to the program.

As an artist, Amanda Tiller investigates systems of information and memory. Her work spans various media including drawing, printmaking, sculpture, embroidery, and video. She has exhibited in New York, Japan, and across the United States.
