Babatunde Olatinwo, RN is one of ten students in the 2021 UMass Amherst undergraduate class to be honored as a 21st Century Leader at Undergraduate Commencement on May 14, 2021. The award recognizes the exemplary achievement, initiative and leadership of some of the university's most talented and accomplished graduating seniors.

Tunde, of Monroe, Connecticut, completed a BS in Nursing in the Accelerated nursing track in February 2021. Prior to enrolling as a nursing student, he served six years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force, where he received medals for outstanding achievement and meritorious service. As a nursing student, he helped set up the UMass Public Health Promotion Center, facilitating campus and community COVID-19 testing and contact tracing efforts and recruiting workers.

Dr. Kate Green, Director of the Accelerated nursing program, said in her letter of support for Tunde's nomination for this award:

In addition to his academic achievements Tunde has been a strong contributor to the campus and to the larger community during the public health COVID crisis and has helped improve the quality of life in the region both on campus and in the wider community.  He very simply does not stop working to better conditions for others.

Fellow students look up to Tunde as an example of what a leader should be, and took action following his lead.

Tunde plans to pursue his career ambitions in the next few years by finishing the training for the complicated nursing work he has started doing, then returning to school to be an advanced practice nurse. I have every confidence that he will continue to be the best he can be- and will continue inspire others to be the best they can be.

I am delighted to support the nomination of Babatunde Olatinwo for the 21st Century Leaders Award. He has made, and will continue to make, UMass Amherst proud.
