2021 Spring Seminar Series: Dr. Joseph Caprini

Tuesday, April 13, 2021 -
12:00pm to 1:00pm
Online via Zoom

The UManage Center for the Science of Symptom Self-Management and the Office of Research in the College of Nursing are pleased to present the following talk by Dr Joseph Caprini, "COVID-19: UPDATE 2021: Thrombosis Risk Assessment and the latest guidelines for anticoagulation in these patients". Dr. Caprini will begin this presentation by discussing the importance of correctly identifying the set point for high and highest risk in a variety of medical and surgical patients using the Caprini risk score. This will allow dividing patients into three groups including those not requiring anticoagulation, those at standard risk requiring anticoagulation for a minimum of seven to 10 days, and those benefiting from extended 14 to 28 days of anticoagulant prophylaxis. The discussion will then focus on the COVID-19 pandemic including mechanisms, clinical thrombotic events, and the latest anticoagulation guidelines. The talk will conclude by emphasizing the importance of extended prophylaxis in high-risk individuals and the value of everyone completing their own thrombosis risk score now before they develop an infection, become injured, or otherwise require hospitalization.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn how to properly interpret the Caprini score for an individual medical or surgical population in order to provide optimal thrombosis prophylaxis options.
  2. Understand when the addition of intermittent pneumatic compression to anticoagulant prophylaxis is imperative to minimize the incidence of breakthrough venous thromboembolism.
  3. Beware of the latest guidelines and recommendations for using anticoagulant prophylaxis in patients with COVID-19 infection.
  4. Understand the value of performing a personal individual thrombosis risk assessment using the caprini score and have it become part of your permanent medical record.

Dr. Caprini is Senior Clinician Educator at the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago, and Emeritus Physician at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanstown, Illinois.
