Orientation & Transitions Leaders (OTLs) are responsible for inspiring University affinity and facilitating the year-round New Student Experience to prepare students and their families to adjust to living and acting responsibly, cultivating academic readiness, and navigating campus life at the University of Massachusetts.

Position Highlights

Time Commitment

Being an Orientation and Transitions Leader is a year-round commitment with seasonal schedules:

  • Ready for the U in June and July
  • Welcome to the U in September
  • Family Weekend in October
  • Ready for the U and Welcome to the U for spring semester students
  • The OTL position is a full-time and live-in position during the months of June and July
  • OTLs must be available for training on Fridays 2:30 - 5:00 PM from March 1 – May 3, 2024

In addition to developing leadership, public speaking, time management, and networking skills, Orientation and Transitions Leaders are paid hourly at a rate of $16.

Qualifications

  • OTLs must be University undergraduate students enrolled in degree granting programs with at least six credits.
  • Students who accept the position must be available for and maintain active student status from April 2024 through March 2025. Students graduating prior to March 2025 are not eligible to apply.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required at time of hire and after Spring 2024 grades are released in June. OTLs must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to remain in the position.
  • OTLs must be free of current student conduct sanctions and have resolved any pending conduct charges two weeks before OTL duties begin in June. NSOT will review all OTL conduct histories with the Student Conduct and Community Standards Office.
  • OTLs must be eligible and must reside in a residence hall at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
  • OTLs must be eligible to work at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Application and Interview Process

The 2024-25 U-Staff job application will be available until January 17th.

Eligible applicants for the Orientation and Transitions Leader position participate in a multi-round selection process:

1. November 27 - January 19:  Applications are reviewed and students moving forward will be invited to participate in a Group Interview

2. February 3: Group Interviews will be held in-person

3. February 5 - February 15:  Students moving on from the Group Interview round will be invited to the Individial Round during which they will create and upload a video presentation. 

4. February 20: Students selected to be 2023-24 Orientation and Transitions Leaders will be notified.
