New Students are required to attend a two-day New Students Orientation (NSO) Summer session and participate in Fall NSO on Labor Day weekend.
CHOOSING YOUR SUMMER NSO SESSION
There are 10 Summer NSO sessions to choose from. Reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Session dates fill up quickly.
Special Services: If you need any special services while at orientation, please complete the special services section of the online Summer NSO registration form. If you need assistance during the academic year, please complete the Disability Services Student Intake Form.
When you come to UMass Amherst for Summer NSO, you will have a busy two days on campus taking care of business, registering for classes, and meeting new people.
First-year students move to campus on the Friday before Labor Day weekend. You will participate in New Students Convocation and special events to get you ready for your first semester. You'll also make connections with faculty, staff, and other students who are here to help you get acclimated to the university. Plus, you will find your way around campus and town before classes start.
Orientation for international students has two components. The first part is completed with the New Students Orientation (NSO) office. NSO is when you will register for your classes, and get ready for your transition from your last school to UMass Amherst. International students can do their NSO on campus, in June/July or online.
The second part is done with the International Programs Office (IPO). International students must be on campus at the end of the summer to complete the in-person International Student Orientation (ISO). The ISO covers immigration requirements, document checks, information on how to study in the US education system, and cultural/ safety/health information sessions to help with your transition to the United States.
ORIENTATION FOR PARENTS AND FAMILIES
Whether you are sending your first or your fifth student, parents and families also need some help with the transition to UMass Amherst. Our orientation for parents and families is designed to support your family in this transition. Presentations include academics, support services, money matters, and much more. You will also meet with university faculty and staff. Your student must register for a session before you can sign up.Learn more about Parents & Family Orientation
