Laura Valdiviezo, associate professor in the department of teacher education and curriculum studies, has been appointed director of the Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies (CLACLS).

CLACLS promotes research, training and public engagement on the histories, cultures and politics of Latin American and Caribbean peoples across the Americas and throughout the world. The center seeks to be a hemispheric, cross-border space for critical reflection, exchange and intellectual production. CLACLS is within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the position is also supported financially by the deans of the Colleges of Education and Humanities and Fine Arts.

As an ethnographer, Valdiviezo has analyzed teachers’ interpretations of educational and language policy and their contributions to multicultural education and diversity in schools that host culturally and linguistically diverse students. Her research has taken place in international rural/urban contexts including indigenous and Afro-Latin American communities and urban schools serving recent immigrant and refugee families in the United States.

Her current research has been published in International Journal for the Sociology of Language; International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism; Intercultural Education; Cultural Studies of Science Education; International Education Journal; and Revista Iberoamericana de Educación among others. With colleague Sally Galman, she is editor-in-chief of Anthropology and Education Quarterly. She also serves as editorial board member for the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, and the journal Race, Ethnicity and Education. She is a reviewer in several refereed journals of international reputation.
