UMass Police, Amherst Fire Department Host St. Baldrick’s Foundation Head-Shaving Event to Raise Funds for Childhood Cancer Research

DATE:           Sunday, April 6

TIME:            11:30 a.m.

PLACE:         Rafters Sports Bar, 422 Amity St., Amherst

With a goal of raising $75,000, more than 200 volunteers have registered to shave their heads to help support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s mission to conquer childhood cancer.

Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research and funding the most promising research initiatives to find cures. As the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, St. Baldrick’s hosts signature head-shaving events where volunteers collect pledges and then shave their heads in solidarity with children fighting cancer.

This is the fifth year UMass Amherst Police and Amherst Fire Department members have collaborated with Rafters Sports Bar to host the head-shaving fundraiser. Police officers, firefighters and corrections officers from the area are also expected to participate along with UMass Amherst students and local residents.
