The University of Massachusetts Amherst is celebrating Homecoming from Oct. 19-28. Several public events are free and open to the public. They include:
Nearly Naked Mile
On Friday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m., starting from Northeast Quadrangle.This is acommunity service event focused on a large clothing drive for new or lightly worn clothing. Participants donate articles of clothing and then proceed to run or walk a mile nearly naked in appropriate attire for the event (undergarments, bathing suit, boxer shorts, T-shirts, shorts, tank tops and camisoles)
OnSaturday, Oct. 27, starting at noon near the softball complex. Floats will cross University Drive and continue on Fearing Street, then turn left into parking lot and proceed through the Southwest Residential Area to meet the marching band. The parade will move onto Massachusetts Avenue and then turn into Haigis Mall and continue on the pedestrian path to the Student Union.
Homecoming Fall Festival
OnSaturday, Oct. 27, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the Library lawn. The event will include UMass Police giving a demonstration on the dangers of texting and driving; drills and demonstrations by the Army and Air Force ROTC units; presentations on the new Commonwealth Honors College and the campus master plan; a plant and soil science turf display; tours of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library and the Old Chapel; appearances by the UMass cheerleaders and dance team, Sam the Minuteman; a kids-zone with family-friendly activities and crafts, and a student talent show.
