UMass Amherst Begins Survey of Campus Climate of Inclusion (with Video)

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is conducting a confidential survey of all current students, faculty and staff to better understand the challenges of creating a campus environment that is respectful and inclusive for all.

On Nov. 14, all faculty, students and staff received a personalized email invitation with a link to the survey, which is voluntary and is estimated to take 15-20 minutes to complete.

The Campus Climate Survey supports the university’s Diversity Strategic Plan, which was adopted in 2015 and which includes the goal of improving the campus climate of inclusion.

Questions concern individuals’ perceptions of the campus climate for inclusion, their work environment, their interactions with others on campus and characteristics of their identity. The survey data is intended to assess whether campus values are reflected in the daily experience of those who work and study here, and it will guide diversity strategic planning, including campus policies, priorities and distribution of resources.

In announcing the survey, UMass Amherst Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy, said, “We celebrate difference in all of its forms and continue to strive for a campus climate where all are welcome. Our adherence to these values is especially important as we emerge from a period when the public discourse has been divisive and hurtful to so many members of our community.”

For those without computer access or who prefer not to respond to an email link, the survey will be available on paper and at computer kiosks set up across campus. Employees who request it will be given release time to fill out the survey.

A host of incentives are being offered to encourage participation. Prizes include a bicycle from Coca-Cola, headsets, Dining Dollars, campus dining cards, dinner at the University Club, Campus Garage passes, UMass athletic gear, tickets to performances at the Mullins Center, Amazon gift cards, OfficeMax gift cards, tickets to UMass Amherst home games, tickets to Fine Arts Center performances, T-shirts and gift cards for coffee.
