UMass Amherst is hosting a campus-wide scavenger hunt in celebration of Earth Day. Students will discover sustainability hiding in plain sight by finding green locations, posting photos to Instagram with the tag #UMassEarthDay, and by answering sustainability-related questions. Student teams will receive clues via Sustainable UMass’ Instagram account (umass_sustain) and have a chance to win $1,000 in Amazon gift cards.
This event will connect students to the green aspects of the UMass Amherst campus, says Benjamin Aufill, campus sustainability communications and marketing manager. He says, “Students are going to discover the variety of sustainability features on our campus from green buildings, to permaculture gardens, to electric vehicle charging stations, to a bike share program. The scavenger hunt will educate students on what is green and teach them how to be sustainable every day by highlighting nature, local foods, clean energy, alternative transportation, sustainability information databases and more.”
The scavenger hunt covers the entire UMass Amherst campus with students starting at the Earth Day Festival tent on the north lawn of the Student Union at 2 p.m. Clues will be sent out every half hour starting at 2:30 p.m. and the last clue will be sent at 4 p.m. At 5 p.m., students will then return to the Earth Day Festival tent on the north lawn of the Student Union to submit their answer sheets and to find out the winner of the first Earth Day Scavenger Hunt.
