The Student Legal Services Office is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a panel discussion and an evening gala in the Marriott Center on Friday, Oct. 17.
The event opens with a panel on “National Security and Due Process” with attorney Burton Weinstein, Michael McAuliff, senior congressional reporter at the Huffington Post, and Charles Stimson, senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation. Facilitated by attorney Charles J. DiMare, director of the Student Legal Services Office, the panelists will discuss a national security database of suspicious activities, its place in the democracy and the problems balancing the due process rights of citizens with the security provided by such a database.
In the evening, the 40th Anniversary Gala in the Marriott Center will feature student musical performances and guest speakers, including past and present board members, directors and student leaders of SLSO. At the cocktail hour, guests can socialize and network with fellow alumni and students while enjoying appetizers and a cash bar. A buffet style dinner will follow. The cost of the gala is $30 per person. The deadline to register is Oct. 1.
In recognition of Chuck DiMare, who will soon be retiring from his role as director of SLSO, the office is accepting donations to establish an endowed scholarship in his name. The scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who is pursuing a career in law. In honor of SLSO’s anniversary, donations of $40 or more will receive a SLSO 40th Anniversary T-shirt.
