Yael Rice, Five College Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Islamic Art and Architecture at Amherst and Hampshire colleges, will keynote the 14th annual Mark Roskill Graduate Student Symposium in Art History on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 4:30 p.m. in 227 Herter Hall.
The symposium will address the topic of “The Material World: Quality and the Canon.” Rice’s talk will address the interconnected genealogies among Persianate, European and North American material cultures.
The event will also feature presentations by graduate students from around the country. The students’ topics will include the stained glass windows of Santa Maria del Fiore, the work of Oscar Howe, and the paintings of the “Turkish Primitives.”
Sponsored by the Graduate School, UMass Arts Council and the department of art, architecture and art history, the event is free and open to the public.
