The Resistance Studies Initiative Fall 2020 Speaker Series will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m., with a webinar, “2020 Uprisings: What made them possible; What strategies for the future - A Black Lives/Black Liberation Dialogue.”

The event will feature distinguished researchers and activists sharing critical reflections on resistance issues.​

Featured speakers will include:

Melina Abdullah, Black Lives Matter/LA; Professor, Department of Pan-African Studies at California State University L.A.

Rose Brewer, People's Strike coalition; University of Minnesota Distinguished Teaching Professor of African American and African Studies

Andrea Jenkins, Minneapolis City Council Vice-President; first Black openly transgender woman elected to U.S. public office

dequi kioni-sadiki, Malcolm X Commemoration Committee Chair; co-editor of “Look for Me in the Whirlwind: From the Panther 21 to 21st Century Revolutions”

The event will begin with an introduction by Akinyele Umoja (NCBS National Board Member and New African People's Organization) and will be co-moderated by Mandy Carter (Southerners on New Ground) and Matt Meyer (International Peace Research Association)--both Resistance Studies associates and co-editors of “We Have Not Been Moved: Resisting Racism and Militarism in 21st Century America”

Amilcar Shabazz of the W.E.B. Du Bois Dept. of Afro-American Studies and the National Council for Black Studies (NCBS) are cosponsoring the webinar.

Pre-registration required for participation, which is free and open to the public.
