Obituary: Jane Bacon, Retired Programmer in Extension

Jane Elizabeth Cowles Bacon, 86, of Amherst, a retired computer programmer in Extension, has died.

Born in 1931 in Springfield, she worked at the Holy Name Rectory while attending Cathedral High School and later at the phone company.

After graduating from Elms College, where she majored in education and mathematics, she worked for Pratt & Whitney, and she taught math at St. Michael's School in Northampton for four years.

She learned computer programming and joined UMass Amherst in 1966 as an Extension technician and was later a programmer, retiring in 1992. Post-retirement, she worked as a department assistant in Extension from 1994-98.

She was the widow of Carl (Roger) Bacon. She is survived by her children, Mary Jane Bacon, David Bacon and his wife Linda, Earl Bacon and Roger Bacon and his wife Barbara Schaffer Bacon; sister Kathleen; and sister-in-law Jean Cowles.
