Gov. Charlie Baker will celebrate the opening of the new $101.8 million state-of-the-art Physical Sciences Building at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Thursday, April 4. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by tours of the facility.

The facility was funded by the state to foster and expand cutting-edge collaborative learning and research at the Commonwealth’s flagship campus. Outstanding physics and chemistry facilities will boost the STEM workforce in Massachusetts and support the state’s innovation economy.

The 95,000-square-foot facility opened this academic year and incorporates the reconstructed West Experiment Station (WES), a 19th century agricultural soils research laboratory and one of the university’s most historic buildings. Funding for the $101.8 million project included $85 million from the state and $16.8 million financed by the campus through the UMass Building Authority.
