AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Amherst journalism department will host a presentation and discussion with journalist Kate Fagan on Thursday, Sept. 21 from 4-6 p.m. in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center.

Fagan, a columnist and feature writer for espnW, and ESPN The Magazine will be discussing her new book What Made Maddy Run: The Secret Struggles and Tragic Death of an All-American Teen (Little, Brown and Company, Aug. 2017). The book profiles college athlete Madison Holleran, whose 2014 suicide rocked the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

Fagan examines Holleran’s struggle with depression, revealing the mounting pressures young people—and college athletes in particular—face in an attempt to achieve perfection in an age of relentless connectivity and social media saturation.

A reception and signing will follow the presentation, which is free and open to the public.

A regular panelist and guest-host of ESPN’s “Around the Horn” and contributor to “Outside the Lines,” Fagan previously spent three seasons covering the NBA’s 76ers for The Philadelphia Inquirer. In college, she was a star for the University of Colorado women’s basketball team, graduating in 2004.
