Communication Department Produces Multiple Award Winners at National Conference

Department of communication faculty were well represented at this year’s 2020 National Communication Association (NCA) Virtual Conference from Nov. 19 through 22. The focus of the conference was on “Communication at the Crossroads.”

The NCA advances Communication as the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry.

Doctoral students received top paper awards:
Menno Reijven and Alkim Yalin (coauthors) received the award in Language and Social Interaction for their paper “Categorizing YouTube Comments as Act Sequences.”
Victoria Alcazar in Performance Studies for “‘This Much of the Flour and This Much of the Spice’ Women’s Storytelling as Creating Embodied Archives of Resistance in the Space of the Kitchen”
• In the Theater, Film and New Multi-media category, Brendan McCauley’s “Queer Worldbreaking: Der Samurai’s Murderous Ontological Horizon”
Colby Miyose was recognized this year with Top Paper in Asian/Pacific/American Communication Studies Division

In addition, associate professor Claudio Moreira, along with current doctoral students Katty Alhayek, Timothy Sutton, and Porntip Israsena Twishime, and as well as Ph.D. graduates Ayshia Elizabeth Stephenson-Celadilla and Carmen Hernandez Ojeda, with Bryant Keith Alexander, received the 2020 Ellis-Bochner Autoethnography and Personal Narrative Research Awards for their coauthored article “‘I’m Sorry My Hair is Blocking Your Smile:’ A Performative Assemblage and Intercultural Dialogue on the Politics of Hair and Place.”

The Ellis-Bochner Autoethnography and Personal Narrative Research Award is sponsored by Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction Affiliate of the NCA.

In addition, many other faculty and grad students presented sessions at the conference, including emeritus faculty and Ph.D. program graduates who participated.
