Citation Issued in March 3 Car-Pedestrian Accident at UMass Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. - A motor vehicle citation has been issued by University of Massachusetts police to Kathryn Caserta, of Waldwick, N.J., operator of a car involved in a car/pedestrian accident March 3 on campus, according to John W. Luippold Jr., director of public safety and chief of police at the University.

The accident occurred at 5:02 p.m. at the intersection of Governors Drive and Commonwealth Avenue on the northwest side of campus.

The citation is for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, Luippold said. Caserta is a UMass student.

UMass sophomore Allison Lustig, 19, of Shrewsbury, who was injured in the accident, died March 11 in Baystate Medical Center, where she had been hospitalized in critical condition since the time of the accident.

A memorial service for Lustig will be held at the Newman Center on campus at 6 p.m. March 31.
