Black History Month Events Planned on Campus

The university will celebrate Black History Month, also known as Black Heritage Month, during February with a series of art performances, activities, lectures, films and more.

Events include:

Film Showings: Black History Month Films

Wednesdays, 7 p.m.

New Africa House Theatre (basement)

Each Wednesday of this month, the Afro-Am Undergraduate Council will host a showing of Black History films starting at 7 p.m. Films include “Malcom X,” “Selma,” “Straight Outta Compton” and “The Birth of a Nation.” Light refreshments will be provided.

Police Violence and the Black Community: A Creative Response

Monday, Feb. 3, 6:30-8 p.m.

New Africa House Theatre (basement)

A lively conversation focused on the impact of police violence on black communities and how artists offer creative responses. This event will feature Joe Gonzalez from PHILADANCO! The Philadelphia Dance Company in conversation with Amy Jordan and Touissant Losier from the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies. This event is free and open to the public.

The Cyph

Friday, Feb. 7, 6 p.m.

New Africa House Theatre (basement)

The Cyph is a creative series where artists of the African Diaspora come together to share work and joy with the community.

Talk: Running from the Washingtons: Ona Judge and the Quest for Freedom

Wednesday, Feb. 12, 5 p.m.

Commonwealth Honors College Events Hall

Historian, writer and lecturer Erica Armstrong Dunbar will discuss the life of Ona Judge, a woman whose life story examines the irreconcilable tension between the concept of freedom and the institution of slavery. “Running from the Washingtons” illuminates the contradictions and flaws of America and its founding fathers and highlights the bravery and courage of a young enslaved woman who literally stole herself from George and Martha Washington.

Community Building Dinner

Thursday, Feb 27, 5:30 p.m.

Campus Center, Amherst Room

The Malcolm X Cultural Center will celebrate Black History Month with a dinner where students, faculty and staff get together to identify common values that build and strengthen a community.
