AMHERST, Mass. - Ever wish your car got better mileage? How about 612 miles per gallon? That’s exactly the mileage attained by a car designed by a group of six University of Massachusetts mechanical engineering students this past academic year. Led by professor Ian Grosse, the team took top honors at the National Supermileage Design Competition held in Marshall, Mich., May 30-31. The UMass vehicle placed first in the U.S. and third worldwide. This was the University’s third year in the international collegiate competition, which is sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineering.

Rivera, of Amherst, has a doctorate in bilingual counseling and higher education administration from UMass, and 10 years of experience in teaching and programming for minority students. Rivera served as director of student support services at Mount Wachusett Community College prior to accepting the position at UMass. In announcing the appointment, College of Engineering Dean Joseph I. Goldstein said that Rivera comes to UMass with "an excellent background and a real enthusiasm for improving our recruitment and advising activities for minority students."

Matthew Golombek, who has worked with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on the mission since its inception five years ago, studied the geology of Mars, Earth, and the moon while earning his master’s and doctoral degrees in geology from the University in 1978 and 1981, respectively.
