University Hosting Undergraduate Women in Physics Conference

The university is hosting the northeast regional American Physical Society Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) Friday, Jan. 18-Sunday, Jan. 20.

The conference is designed to help undergraduate women continue in physics by providing an opportunity to experience a national conference, obtain information about graduate school and network with other women in physics.

The program will include faculty research talks, panel discussions about graduate school and careers in physics, workshops, lab tours, discussions and student research talks and a poster session.

Organizing students and faculty from UMass Amherst, Smith College, Amherst College and Mount Holyoke College will be joined at the conference by students from Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, portions of New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Attendees will hear a keynote address from Fabiola Gianotti, who became the first woman to hold the position of director-general at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, when she was appointed in 2016. Gianotti has a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics from the University of Milano. She has been a research physicist at CERN since 1994.
