SPHHS Announces 2021 Research Day Winners

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) held its 24th Annual Research Day on April 16, in a virtual format that included both oral presentations delivered live via Zoom and an interactive online poster session utilizing Flipgrid. Altogether, 40 presentations spanning all departments and academic levels – including undergraduate, masters, and doctoral student presenters – served to highlight the depth and breadth of SPHHS student research.

“Thank you to all the students who participated in a highly successful SPHHS Research Day, and to all their faculty sponsors,” says Anna Maria Siega-Riz, dean of SPHHS. “I also want to thank the many students, faculty and staff who turned out on Zoom to support and ask questions of our student oral presenters, and to everyone who logged in and engaged with our student poster presentations on Flipgrid. Our 33 poster presentations received over 1600 views! Together, you helped to make it such a special event.”

The event concluded with a live awards presentation by Susan Hankinson, associate dean for research.

The 2021 Research Day award winners are:

  • 1st place Oral Presentation Award (Research Category - Public Health): Kathryn Wagner (Biostatistics and epidemiology, Ph.D. - faculty sponsor Lisa Chasan-Taber): “The Impact of a Lifestyle Intervention on Pregnancy and Postpartum Cardiovascular and Insulin Resistance Biomarkers among At-Risk Latinas”
  • 1st place Oral Presentation Award (Research Category - Health Sciences): Ross Brancati (Kinesiology, Ph.D. - faculty sponsor Katherine Boyer): “Time to Contact Captures Declines in Postural Control Following Fatiguing Activity”
  • 1st place Poster Award: Joshua Mogus (Environmental health sciences, Ph.D. - faculty sponsor Laura Vandenberg): “Exposure to the endocrine disrupting chemical, propylparaben, induces long-term disruption to parity-induced reorganization of the mouse mammary gland”
  • 2nd place Poster Award: Brittany Griffin (Biostatistics and epidemiology, Ph.D. - faculty sponsor Lisa Chasan-Taber): “The Association between Neighborhood Crime and Adverse Birth Outcomes in Latina Women”
  • 3rd place Poster Award: Catherine Askew (Biostatistics and epidemiology, Ph.D., - faculty sponsor Susan Hankinson): “A 20-year prospective study of plasma c-peptide as a risk marker of breast cancer development”
