Researchers in the department of communication disorders are seeking English-speaking children to participate in research studies on language development through the Sounds2Syntax Laboratory, directed by assistant professor Jill Hoover.

The lab seeks:

  • Children with typical speech, language and hearing skills, ages 3-6, who speak only English.
  • Children with language impairment, ages 4-6, who have normal hearing, communicate verbally and do not have a co-occurring diagnosis of intellectual disability.

All children will be asked to complete standardized measures assessing speech, language and cognition and experimental computer tasks designed to assess vocabulary and grammar.

Studies require children to attend four sessions (approximately 75 minutes in length) in the Sounds2Syntax Laboratory in Arnold House. Children will receive small toys or books at the end of each session as compensation for their participation.

Parents or guardians of minors who wish to participate can call 413/545-3177 or email the Sounds2Syntax Laboratory at s2slab@comdis.umass.edu or Jill Hoover at jrhoover@comdis.umass.edu.
