Offshore Wind Energy Program to Hold Student Poster Session

The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Offshore Wind Energy Program invites the campus community to attend its annual student poster session on Tuesday, April 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Amherst Room at the Campus Center.

Students and recent alumni will present posters showcasing the wide range of research that is proposed or currently underway, including engineering better designs for floating offshore wind turbines, evaluating policies that encourage renewable energy growth and examining offshore wind farm economics.

There will be light refreshments, a cash bar and the opportunity to network with people interested in the many aspects of wind energy development.

The IGERT program was started in 1997 by the National Science Foundation and supports interdisciplinary graduate education spanning science, technology, engineering, mathematics and social sciences at more than 125 sites. Among other goals, the program seeks to establish creative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It also hopes to foster greater diversity in student participation and preparation.

At UMass Amherst, the Offshore Wind IGERT program started in 2011 and evolved into the Wind Energy Fellows Program in 2018. This program has supported over 40 graduate students, pursuing degrees in nine departments and three colleges across campus.
