The political scientists behind the UMass Amherst Poll released the results of their latest national survey of 1,000 Americans over the past week, shining a light on the country’s views on the Supreme Court, President Joe Biden, the upcoming midterm elections, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, racial and LGBT issues and more.

Among the findings of the poll, conducted May 5-9, were:

  • More than half (54%) of Americans disapprove of the job the court is doing.

  • Half (50%) of Americans believe the Supreme Court should let the 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade stand.

  • Two-thirds (66%) of Republicans stated that Roe should be overturned.

  • Biden’s approval, which was a net-positive 51% in an April 2021 UMass Poll, fell to 38% in the latest poll.

  • Just over two-thirds of Republicans (68%) and Trump voters (69%) still say that Biden was not legitimately elected.

  • More than two-thirds (68%) of Republicans believe that the House of Representatives should impeach Biden if the GOP retake the House in this fall’s midterm elections.

  • The clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential race remains former President Donald Trump, who holds a 29-point advantage among GOP voters over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

  • More than half (56%) support providing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his nation’s armed forces with more weapons and other military assistance.

  • Across-the-board decreases in support for a number of police reform measures since an April 2021 UMass Poll asked about the topic.

  • Support for the BLM movement in the U.S. has decreased since last April, with support for the movement’s goals falling from 48% to 41% and backing of the movement’s strategies and tactics dropping from 40% to 31%.

  • Over one-third of Americans overall (35%), 60% of Republicans and over two-thirds of conservatives (67%) continue to oppose allowing gays and lesbians to legally marry.

Full details and comments from the directors of the poll can be found in a series of stories published by the Office of News and Media Relations.
