Laura Lagano, registered dietitian/nutritionist and co-founder of the Holistic Cannabis Academy, will deliver the 30th Annual Virginia A. Beal Lecture, “Medical Cannabis: Are You Ready for the New Frontier of Healthcare?,” on Wednesday, April 25 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.

Lagano’s keynote will highlight advances in medical cannabis care, an area that can be poorly understood by consumers and healthcare professionals alike.

Nationally recognized as a nutrition expert, Lagano has written for periodicals as diverse as Cooking Light, Environmental Nutrition, and The American Nurse and been quoted in publications such The New York Times, Child, Glamour, and Food Arts and has appeared on camera on CNN, NJN, Food Network, Fox, as well as network affiliates around the country. She is a seasoned speaker who has presented to consumers, executives, chefs, educators, and health professionals.

The Beal program will include a graduate student research open poster session beginning at 4:30 p.m., as well as a presentation of the Virginia A. Beal, Peter Pellet and Helen Mitchell awards.

The lecture and accompanying programming are free to the public.

The Beal lecture is the only endowed lecture in the department of nutrition. In 1989, professor emerita Virginia A. Beal, a pioneer in the field of nutrition and a longtime member of the nutrition faculty, established an endowment to provide students, faculty, dietetics professionals, and alumni and friends with an opportunity to discuss current challenges and advances in the nutrition field.

The evening is a celebration of nutrition research, and an opportunity to acknowledge the department’s finest students through the presentation of endowed scholarship awards, one of which bears Virginia Beal’s name. Beal presented the first lecture in 1989, and in the intervening years nationally renowned researchers in nutrition have spoken at this annual event.
