Krauthamer and Carvel Named UMACC Co-Chairs
Barbara Krauthamer, dean of the Graduate School and senior vice provost for Interdisciplinary Programs and Innovation, and Gregory Carvel, head coach for men’s ice hockey have been tapped for a two-year term to co-chair the UMass Amherst Community Campaign (UMACC). They will replace Willie Hill who retired from UMass last February.
UMACC is an employee and retiree benefit that enables UMass faculty, staff and retirees to donate to nonprofit organizations through payroll deduction, by check or credit card. Last year’s campaign raised $440,000 with around $268,000 donated to local nonprofits. This year’s campaign goal is to raise $450,000.
“Local nonprofits tell us that UMACC is extremely important to their financial health and thereby, to the Western Mass community as a whole,” says Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy. “Year after year our faculty, staff and retirees come together to show that the work our local nonprofits do truly matters. Having Barbara and Greg lead the campaign toward our goal demonstrates that when UMass unites, great things happen.”
Krauthamer and Carvel are both strong advocates and supporters of local nonprofits. As co-chairs they are committed to increasing local giving and the number of donors to the campaign.
“Athletics has a long history of contributing time and resources to local nonprofits” Carvel says. “It is exciting to have a chance to include the larger campus community in these efforts so our impact is even bigger.”
Krauthamer adds, “I have long been a supporter of the Amherst Survival Center. They provide life sustaining services to some of the most vulnerable people in our community, including members of our UMass family. It is an honor to be called upon to chair the effort to raise donations for organizations that impact many lives.”
This year’s UMACC campaign will kick off Oct. 22, with a launch party and nonprofit fair. The event is open to the public and will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Great Hall in Old Chapel. There will be 30 nonprofits, food, and live entertainment. Attendees will be eligible to win up to two $100 gift cards generously donated by the UMass Store.
