Giuliano Discusses Nursing Innovation on Podcast
Nurse inventor Karen Giuliano was recently featured on Touch Point Media’s podcast, Healthcare Soothsayers with Dr. Bonnie Clipper. In the 20-minute podcast, Giuliano and Clipper discuss how nurses can influence the design and development of inventions that will reshape healthcare.
Giuliano told Clipper that UMass understands the importance of supporting nursing innovation and expanding the academic preparation of aspiring nurses.
“We need nurses to have some skills that they don’t currently get in their undergraduate education, like some basic business skills,” said Giuliano, a former critical care nurse who worked on product innovation with Philips Healthcare before joining UMass. “If you have an idea, you have to be able to present it in a way to group of people who can help you realize that idea. And you have to be able to do some financial analysis along with that.”
Giuliano holds a joint position as an associate professor in the College of Nursing and the Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS), where sheheads up a product development and innovation laboratory.
