Clinics, Performances, Astronaut to Highlight Western Massachusetts Flute Day
The department of music and dance will host its third annual Western Massachusetts Flute Day, coordinated by flute faculty member Cobus du Toit, on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Music Wing of the Fine Arts Center.
The event is open to flutists of all ages and skill levels.
The day will feature clinics and classes with du Toit along with guest flutists Jill Felber and Julianna Nickel, plus a masterclass with Felber, Angeleita Floyd, and Claudia Anderson, and a unique presentation by astronaut Cady Coleman about flute playing in space.
All day, there will be mini-lessons with Lea Pearson, an injury prevention specialist, and fundamentals checkups with the UMass flute graduate students.
The event will culminate with a free performance by du Toit, Nickel, the UMass Flute Ensemble, and guest artist ZAWA! at 5 p.m. in Bezanson Recital Hall. ZAWA!, a duo comprised of flutists Felber and Anderson, has appeared at Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, and has headlined the National Flute Association convention.
Registration for Flute Day is $20 in advance and $30 on the day of the event. To register, visit https://www.umass.edu/music/event/flute-day.
