To wrap up a most unique academic year, the UMass Amherst Department of Music & Dance held its annual Convocation on April 27 to honor its music scholarship award winners and graduates. You can view the event program here.
Held via Zoom videoconference, the event was hosted by department chair Salvatore Macchia and featured imaginative and heartfelt performances by faculty, students and alumni. Percussionist Jonathan Schmidt, last year’s winner of the Theodore Presser Scholarship, performed Thierry De May’s Musique de Table with fellow percussionists Rashaad Greene and Seth Lampert. Tubist Tyler Woodbury, co-recipient of the 2019 Howard Lebow Memorial Scholarship, performed Barbara York’s How Beautiful accompanied by Ben Tibbetts, piano, and fellow 2019 Lebow recipient Jacob Kaplan performed a saxophone arrangement of Albert Brumley’s I’ll Fly Away.
On a more somber note, the department marked the recent loss of bassoon student Quinn Woodworth with an arrangement of Bill Withers’ Lean on Me by his fellow bassoon studio colleagues and faculty coordinator Rémy Taghavi. Students and alumni from our string studios, led by faculty coordinator Elizabeth Chang, also performed Bach’s “Es ist genug” in support of violin student Emma Price, who recently lost her father, Troy.
The Dance Program’s senior recognition event on May 8 will include messages of congratulations from award-winning choreographer David Dorfman and Robert Lynch ‘71, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts.
