Sara K. Jones, Assistant Professor in the UMass Amherst Music & Dance Department, was recently selected as Modern Band in Higher Education Fellow by Little Kids Rock. Modern Band is a program that teaches students to perform, improvise, and compose using rock, R&B, reggae, hip-hop, and other popular music. As part of the fellowship, Sara will receive modern band instruments to use with her music classes (guitars, basses, keyboards, drums, tech), curricular materials, and will also take part in a week-long training session. Sara already utilizes elements of Modern Band in her coursework, and plans to integrate aspects of it into a new graduate curriculum and professional development opportunities for local school districts.
