Percussion Day 2021 at UMass Amherst

An in-person Day of Percussion for the community, high school and college students and their families.

Ayano Kataoka, coordinator (UMass Percussion Professor)

With guest artists Mike Truesdell, Percussion Professor at Ithaca College, and Nani Agbeli, African Drumming performer/teacher

Includes performances by the UMass Percussion Studio & Prof. Kataoka, an African Drum Workshop, and a Masterclass and Concert by guest artist Mike Truesdell

Free and open to all. (See new policy below) 
Option to buy $5 raffle tickets for percussion equipment prizes; sponsors include Zildjian/Vic Firth, Yamaha, Pearl/Adams, Marimba One, Black Swamp, Grover Percussion, Beetle Percussion & Third Floor Bazaar.

10:30-11: Registration & welcome with drinks/snacks
11-12: Performance by UMass Percussion Studio
12:15-1:15: Masterclass by Mike Truesdell
1:15-2: Lunch (Pizza will be served in the Bezanson Hall lobby or bring your own)
2-3: African Drumming workshop with Nani Agbeli
3:15-4:15: Performance and Q&A by Prof. Ayano Kataoka
4:30-5:20: Mike Truesdell guest artist concert
5:20-?: Raffle & Connect with percussion faculty & students

Percussion Studio concert (11am) includes Garth Neustadter's Seaborne, Mark Applebaum's Aphasia, Christopher Deane's Mourning Dove Sonnet, and others!

 

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: New Policy

As of October 2021, all attendees to Dept. of Music & Dance events must:

  • Wear a face mask regardless of vaccination status.
  • Be prepared to show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within the last 72 hours. UMass students, faculty, and staff can show their UCard as proof of vaccination.
