Bachelor of Arts in Music Degree

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Music may now choose from four areas of emphasis: Performance (Classical), Music History, Music Theory or JAAMS (Jazz and African American Music Studies).

Both the Performance and JAAMS areas of emphasis require a successful audition for entry; Music History and Music Theory have supporting material requirements instead of an audition.

A less intensive degree in Music than the Bachelor of Music; can be useful for double-majoring or pursuing a more generalized liberal arts education.  Has similar core requirements to the Bachelor of Music Degree, but does not include the Class Piano or Conducting requirements, and requires six (not eight) semesters of private lessons and ensembles. Students must complete the requirements of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, including a Foreign Language through the Intermediate II level.

Requirements for Bachelor of Arts in Music, Performance (Classical) track:

  • Theory - 5 semesters
  • Aural Skills (Ear Training) - 4 semesters
  • Music Literature - 1 semester
  • Music History - 3 semesters
  • Applied Music (Private study) - 6 semesters
  • Ensembles - 6 semesters
