The famed percussionist and drummer Max Roach taught at UMass Amherst and Jazz in July for 20 years, alongside colleagues such as current distinguished faculty Jeffrey Holmes and Salvatore Macchia. 

To pay tribute to Roach and explore his musical and UMass legacy, the Department is bringing together guest musicians who studied and played with him, along with other jazz artists, faculty and students for a wide-ranging, fast-paced concert in Tillis Hall.

Music includes selections from We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite, Fred Tillis' Festival Journey, royal hartigan's arrangement of St. Louis Blues, Billy Strayhorn's Take the A Train, and many other tunes performed and composed by Roach over his career.

The Max Roach Centennial Celebration is made possible through funding from the Chancellor’s Office. The Celebration was created in collaboration with the Max Roach Estate, as well as the UMass Amherst Fine Arts Center, W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies, Department of Music and Dance, and the UMass Minuteman Marching Band.
