Computer Lab at UMass Amherst

This document is only for participants with confirmed registration for a workshop!

Here are directions for the Amherst MA workshops "Molecular Visualization in Biological Science Classes: RasMol and Chime" in the Chemistry Resource Center computer lab, Goessman Building (aka Goessman Lab) room 152. Each of you will attend three separate one-day meetings at this location on the dates specified in your registration confirmation.

See also the Map of the UMass Campus, which you may wish to print.

Each workshop will begin promptly at 9:00 AM. If you are not staying in the hotel the night before, please allow extra time to park, walk to the Goessman, and find the computer lab room 152. Driving time from Route 128 at the Mass Pike is about two hours. A free lunch (vegetarian available), will be provided at noon. Each workshop will end officially at 5:00 PM.

Directions to UMass, Amherst, Campus Center Parking Garage:

From the East, via the Mass Pike, take exit 8 to Palmer MA. After the toll booth, at the T, turn right onto Route 32 (obeying the sign to UMass). Go thru one set of lights to a second set at a T. Turn right (obeying sign to Amherst). At the next light, bear right onto 181 North (via Bondsville and Belchertown). Keep right at the fork shortly thereafter. Follow signs to Amherst/UMass. Watch for the sharp left turn of Rt 181 at the bridge in Bondsville. Some miles later, 181 joins Rt 202 (turn right) just before Belchertown center. About one mile after you pass through Belchertown center, turn left on Route 9. Continue into and straight through Amherst on Rt 9, turning right in Hadley on Route 116 North. (Rt 116 South turns left earlier, in Amherst center -- go past it till you get to Rt 116 North on your right.) See below for directions from 116 North.

Alternatively, from the East via Route 2, exit on Route 202 South. After about 22 miles, there will be a blinker. Turn right here at the sign to "Routes 9 and 116, Amherst". You will pass through Pelham. After about 10 miles, you will cross a valley and start uphill into Amherst. At the top of the hill (3rd traffic light in Amherst) will be the Amherst Common on your left, at the intersection with Pleasant St. Continue straight ahead (now Amity St.) to the bottom of the hill, another traffic light, at University Drive. Turn right on University Drive till it ends at a blinker. There, turn right for about half a block, then left at the next light onto Commonwealth Ave. At the first traffic light on Commonwealth (opposite Mullins Center), turn right into the access road to the Campus Center Parking Garage, which is at the top of the hill.

From the West, take the Mass Pike to exit 4, and get on Interstate 91 North. See below for directions from I91.

From the South, take Interstate 91 to exit 19. From the North, take Interstate 91 to exit 20. Go East on Route 9 to Hadley/Amherst/UMass, and after about 5 miles, turn left onto Route 116 North.

On Route 116 North (after Route 9), take the first exit, to UMass. After exiting, the first traffic light is followed by a second light in about half a block, where you turn left onto Commonwealth Ave. At the first traffic light on Commonwealth (opposite Mullins Center), turn right into the access road to the Campus Center Parking Garage.

Directions from the Campus Center Parking Garage to Goessman Bldg Rm. 152, the Chemistry Resource Center (CRC):

If you are staying in the Hotel, see below.

Exit from the Campus Center Parking Garage on the side opposite the entrance (exit the East side) at level 3 (ground level). Immediately in front of you will be the west face of the Lincoln Campus Center, a 10-floor concrete building. You'll notice that the entrances to this building are below grade, via two decending ramp walkways. (For orientation, a prominent 27-floor red brick tower, the W. E. B. DuBois Library, is about a block away to your right, to the South.)

Walk Northeast, following the first walkway to the left of the ramp walkways which decend into the Campus Center. This Northeast pedestrian walkway is level and as wide as a two-lane street. If unsure, ask anyone to point you towards Goessman (pronounced "Guess'mun"). You will pass Draper Hall to your left. Goessman is a 3-floor brick building just North of the Lincoln Campus Center, and the only brick building in view with cream-colored trim (not white).

As you approach Goessman, look for the doorway farthest to your left (Northwest corner of Goessman), which is the only doorway just two steps up from ground level, and the only one with a large flat circular stone just above it. Enter this doorway and go half a flight up the stairs. Turn right down the hallway and the second door on your left is room 152.

Directions from the Central Parking Garage to the Campus Center Hotel (for those who have reserved overnight accomodations).

Walk down either ramp into the Campus Center, then straight ahead to the elevators about half-way through the foyer, on your right. Take an elevator to the 3rd floor, get off, and you will find the front desk for the Hotel. Tell the person there your room is reserved under the "Molecular Visualization Workshop" group, and give them your name.

You may check in any time after 1:00 PM on the day before the workshop meeting. The Hotel front desk is staffed 24 hours a day, so you can check in as late as you wish.

The next morning, go back to the front desk of the Hotel, and exit out the doors opposite it, which is the north side of the Hotel. Walk straight ahead towards Goessman Building, which is the next building to the north. See above for details as you approach Goessman.
