Peer Advising

Mathematics and Statistics Peer Advising

Peer advising is available to Math & Stat majors in room 1557 (formerly 1521E) in the Lederle Graduate Research Tower, as well as remotely via zoom. In-person options can be by appointment or drop-in, and remote options are by appointment. Schedule an appointment using Navigate.

All peer advisors can help with basic questions, for example, the requirements of the different Math & Stat concentrations, using Spire, GenEds, etc. They can also discuss their experiences with courses, internships, applications, and other activities. However, questions on more advanced courses in Math & Stat may be better directed to the advising office or a faculty advisor.

We invite undergraduates to meet with Peer Advisors who have experience in their potential areas of interest. The weekly schedule is below, as well as more info on the peer advisors.

Peer Advising hours for Spring 2023 have ended.

Anay Contractor

Anay Contractor

My name is Anay Contractor, and I'm a junior concentrating in Applied Mathematics. I decided to concentrate in Applied Mathematics because I wanted to bridge theory and practice; that is, I wanted to study the scenarios and problems where mathematical models would be most useful. Outside of the classroom, I write for the Massachusetts Daily Collegian, workout at the Rec, and play Geoguessr.

This summer, I will either be interning as a Data Analytics Intern at Liberty Mutual or a Trading Intern at Trillium Trading (contingent on my final round). Post-college, I hope to work as a trader for a quantitative or proprietary trading firm, so if you're interested in talking about the financial markets, feel free to ask me questions!

Erica Guan

Erica Guan

My name is Erica Guan and I am a Senior Mathematics and Economics double major with a concentration in actuarial science. I am currently the Vice President for Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) on campus which is also known as the actuarial club. I have passed the first three actuarial exams (P, FM, and IFM) and would be happy to help others navigate the exam process as well as the search for internships. This past summer, I interned at The Hartford and had the opportunity to complete a meaningful project and gained technical and analytical skills. I'm looking forward to being a peer advisor again this year and hope to provide helpful insight from my time at UMass; feel free to reach out with any questions!

Varsha Jawahar

Varsha Jawahar

My name is Varsha and I'm a senior pursuing a dual-degree in Computer Science and Actuarial Mathematics with a Film Studies minor. I added Actuarial Math as a second major because I wanted to be exposed to Finance concepts with a STEM background. I plan on pursuing software engineering in tech for a few years after graduation before transitioning into the FinTech space, which is where Actuarial Math will come in. Outside of the classroom, I am currently the Director of Technology for HackUMass and on an executive committee for CHAARG, a female-focused fitness organization. In the past, I have interned at Amazon as an SDE and worked at the UMass Learning Resource Center to help students with CS, Math, and Stats classes. I would be happy to talk about any part of my Math and UMass Experience so feel free to reach out with any questions!

Hailey Paolini

Hailey Paolini

Hello! My name is Hailey and I am a senior math major. I am on the teaching track with an education minor hoping to become a high school math teacher. I have worked in K-12 schools for the past 5 years, most recently as a teachers assistant at a special education program. I have passed both MTEL exams needed to be a licensed math teacher for grades 8-12 in Massachusetts, and I am happy to provide my insights on them! I have been accepted to a couple of graduate programs for mathematics education (M.ED. and MAT programs), and I am happy to share information about the application process and classes that are helpful to have taken. Last semester, I studied on Domestic Exchange at the University of Hawai'i Manoa, and I am so glad UMass gave me the opportunity to be exposed to such diversity and new experiences.

Hi! My name is Maekala and I’m a senior majoring in Mathematics with minors in business and information technology. I’m a statistics & data science concentrator and I hope to find a career working with data in the sport industry in the near future. I am also a CHC member, currently working on a thesis within Isenberg that scopes data analytics into women’s sports. On campus, I also work with UMass Athletics as a course tutor and student learning assistant. Outside of class, I enjoy reading, basketball, and advocating for mental health awareness.
