Summit View Learning

In collaboration with Summit View Learning Tutoring, the UMass Math Department- teaching concentration  is offers a 2 credit internship for students looking to gain experience in teaching math to middle/high school students from disadvantaged populations. 

This internship is a holistic experience which consists of academic writing and reflectingtutoring a student virtually, and coaching from a skilled math educator. You will gain experience working directly with students, lesson planning and preparation, and making the math accessible for your student. 

Upon successful completion of this internship program, those teacher candidates with positive evaluations will be given priority for paid tutoring opportunities through SVL.

Qualifications:

  • Math majors (or related majors) interested in becoming a math teacher.

  • Hardworking and motivated students 

  • Collaborative and reflective life-long learners 

  • Interest in working with students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Requirements for this internship:

  • Meeting with Michelle Donato to review scope of internship the semester before the internship begins.
  • Availability for initial training one evening the week before classes 
  • 3 course meetings in person at UMass (beginning, middle, and end of the semester) run by UMass faculty members Adena Calden and Caitlin Worth ( to be coordinated with accepted candidates).
  • 2 hours a week of virtual tutoring instruction to a student
  • 2 hours a week of lesson preparation
  • 2 hours a week working with your coach and peers
