Probability theory is one of the most powerful areas of mathematics in its ability to model and to predict the behavior of physical systems as well as systems arising in technological applications. The research interests of the probability faculty at UMass Amherst include a variety of fields in pure and applied probability, including stochastic processes, large deviations, ergodic theory, evolutionary game theory, applications to equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, and applications to dynamical systems.

The Applied Mathematics and Computation Seminar, supported by the Center for Applied Mathematics, meets weekly. It serves as an interdisciplinary forum and features mostly external speakers on a wide range of topics in analysis, probability, and applied mathematics.
