Members of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics conduct research in a wide range of areas. More information about those areas, our seminars, and other research activities can be found by following the links below.
Department members conduct a a large variety of subjects in pure mathematics—from number theory and discrete mathematics to probability and analysis. The main areas of pure mathematics at UMass Amherst are listed below. Explore the web links for more information about faculty, seminars and research groups. Note that these groups are not separate or isolated. We believe strongly in the underlying unity of mathematical sciences, and many of us have interests in more than one of these areas. Furthermore, many of these areas are also enriched by interactions with applications.
Our faculty in statistics have a variety interests ranging from theoretical to methodological to applied. We regularly consult and collaborate with our colleagues throughout the university and participate in multidisciplinary research. Visit the web pages below to find faculty, seminars, and more information about research groups.
