Nathan Wycoff, Assistant Professor of Statistics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, was awarded a grant from the NSF's Mathematical Foundations of Digital Twins program along with co-PIs Wouter Hoogkamer (Kinesiology), Meghan Huber (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering), and Dongyhun Kim (CICS). The substantive aims of the project are to improve understanding of how to measure and model human-technology systems and to optimize wearable devices to minimize metabolic effort of agile locomotion. The grant will fund research on the development of statistical tools for analysis of computational engineering data that accommodate infinite-dimensional design spaces and use of these tools in a digital twin of human running augmented by wearable technology, such as powered exoskeletons and advanced footwear.
